Innovative GIS Project Wins RFS Bangor Bursary Prize for Continuous Cover Forestry Excellence

Tomos Jones, Forest Manager at Tilhill Forestry, has been awarded the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) North Wales Division “Bangor Bursary” for the best final-year project at Bangor University.

The award was presented during the RFS North Wales Division Annual General Meeting at Hawarden Estate in North Wales. Dr Alec Dauncey, Lecturer and Coordinator within the Continuous Cover Forestry Group at Bangor University, alongside Simon Miller, Tilhill Forestry’s North Wales Area Manager and RFS North Wales Chairman, presented the award.

Tomos’ project explored the use of GIS analysis to identify areas where Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) management is desirable. CCF is a sustainable forest management approach that involves selectively thinning trees to create a diverse forest structure.

His research highlighted significant gaps in applying remote sensing to identify areas suitable for CCF. Using Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA), Tomos found that 80,266 ha (26%) of Welsh forests are moderately to highly desirable for CCF, delivering various ecosystem services. Notably, 41% of North West Wales’ forests fall into this category. His study underscores the need for further research and potential grants or subsidies to promote CCF adoption, demonstrating the effectiveness of MCA and GIS in pinpointing desirable CCF areas.

Hailing from the picturesque landscapes of North Wales, Tomos embarked on an exciting journey by applying for the prestigious Tilhill Forestry Graduate Scheme during his final year at Bangor University. After successfully completing his studies in May 2025, Tomos joined the Tilhill North Highland Forestry Team in June, ready to contribute his knowledge and passion for sustainable forestry.

On receiving the award, Tomos said:

“I was very pleased to be presented the RFS North Wales Division Bursary award at last year’s AGM and to receive the recognition for my Honours Project, completed during my final year at Bangor University. The topic remains a particular area of interest for myself, and I am eager to continue this research during my employment with Tilhill Forestry.”

Tomos’ Area Manager, Duncan Scott, said:

“We in North Highland are delighted to welcome Tomos into our team, further strengthening our knowledge and passion for forestry. Recognition, through this award, demonstrates the calibre of the individual and the contribution he is making within the industry.”
