Meet Sam Booth, one of Tilhill Forestry’s Forestry Investment Advisors.
Tell us a bit about yourself, what is your background and how did it lead you to working with Tilhill Forestry?
Sam: I’m a Chartered Forester with more than 10 years’ experience in managing a wide variety of forests for a variety of clients. I’ve spent most of my career working in Scotland and the North of England.
Tell us about your job role, what does a typical day look like?
Sam: Depending on what properties we are looking at I tend to be a bit more office based than when I was managing forests. Â When advising clients on the purchase of a property there is much we need to understand before we get to the point of visiting a forest. That being said, I do get out into the forest fairly regularly.
What is your top advice for people thinking of investing in a woodland for the first time?
Sam: Use a competent specialist agent. Of course, I would say that, but using an agent with the combination of knowledge and experience of the forestry industry and current knowledge of the forest market is a real factor in determining the level of return.
You also need a competent manager to deliver your business plan and manage your forest.
What are the benefits to investing in woodland/ forestry?
Sam: There are many:
- Capital growth,
- Portfolio diversifier
- Underpinned by biological growth
- Land backed asset, you can insure against the main risks of fire and storm damage
- Beneficial tax regime for capital gains, income tax and inheritance tax, -The investment sequesters carbon and it has a low correlation with mainstream assets to name just a few.
- It is a tangible asset. You can visit your forest and enjoy it.
