PPE is often quoted as the last line of defence, and that is true.
In the hierarchy of controls we should try to eliminate risks, or put in engineering controls to reduce them. We also have administrative controls such as training, inspections etc.
Only where the risk can’t be reduce to an acceptable level should we turn to PPE to help mitigate the residual risk.
It isn’t as simple as buying any old PPE and hoping it will do.
We must:
• assess what risks we are trying to protect from, making sure the PPE is adequate to do that,
• make sure where more than one item is required they don’t affect each other,
• assess suitability for the individual,
• keep records of it being issued,
• replace it when use by dates are passed
• provide training on the use and inspection of PPE
• maintain PPE to be effective where applicable
• make sure it has suitable storage
• provide it free of charge to workers
• make sure it is purchased from reputable suppliers to avoid counterfeit items.
